Men-at-Arms Swordsmen are the rank and file soldiers of the famous Basilean Legion.
About
Whereas the bulk of the infantry of most human armies are made up of peasants pressed into military service under the feudal system, the Basilean Legion is one of the few professional armies in Pannithor.
So wealthy is the Hegemony, the soldiers of the Legion are clad in armour that even the nobility of some nations would envy. Blocks of infantry are normally armed with either the 'daga' sword or the broad-bladed 'koliskos' spear, accompanied by the distinctive winged shield of the Legion.
Whereas the paladin orders are under the control of the Hegemon himself, the democratically elected Basilean Duma exercises executive control over the men-at-arms of the Legion - accepting, of course, that the Hegemon retains the right to overrule the Duma's commands.

1st Edition

The Basilean army calls its soldiers men-at-arms, and its regiments legions, as was the custom in Primovantor. Some of these legions claim numbers and names that are thousands of years old, but like much else descended from the ancient world, the similarities between today’s military and that of the past are few.
2nd Edition

The backbone of the Basilean forces, the Men at-Arms are the largest, and most highly trained standing army in Mantica. None can match their ranks for discipline of formation, nor tenacity in battle. Though the lowliest of the troops fielded by this great nation, they are its bedrock.
