Men-at-Arms Crossbowmen are the rank and file soldiers of the famous Basilean Legion.
About
Whereas the bulk of the infantry of most human armies are made up of peasants pressed into military service under the feudal system, the Basilean Legion is one of the few professional armies in Pannithor.
So wealthy is the Hegemony, the soldiers of the Legion are clad in armour that even the nobility of some nations would envy.
Blocks of infantry are armed with crosbows, accompanied by the distinctive winged shield of the Legion. Whereas the paladin orders are under the control of the Hegemon himself, the democratically elected Basilean Duma exercises executive control over the men-at-arms of the Legion - accepting, of course, that the Hegemon retains the right to overrule the Duma's commands.

- 3rd Edition - Kings of War – 3rd Edition Rulebook
This unit was originally called Crossbowmen until it was renamed to Men-in-Arms Crossbowmen in 3rd Edition
1st Edition
The Basileans do not make much use of missile weaponry. Their deadliest enemies are the denizens of the Abyss, who close quickly, making skill with a blade of greater importance than skill with a bow. Furthermore, the magical superiority enjoyed by the Hegemony provides its armies with most of the ranged capability they require.
2nd Edition
The ever present threat of the Abyss and their swift-footed creatures means skill at arms is more prized than missile weaponry. But all that means is each shot must count, and the Basilean soldiers chosen to carry crossbows into battle are the best shots Basilea has to offer.
