Undead is an army of walking dead of members of Pannithor

About

Necromancy is the most abhorrent of sorcery, and all who practise it are hated and feared in equal measure. In violation of natural law, Necromancers are able to use their power to defy death itself, extending their own lives virtually indefinitely.

In Pannithor, there is no rest in peace.Across the Successor Kingdoms in Mantica, kings at a time before the Age of Ice are interned in thrice-warded barrows, cursed to spend eternity in undeath for serving Oskan and the Wicked Ones.

Between the Successor Kingdoms where Domivar spilled the blood of so many Wicked Ones, the land is tainted by dark magic, causing corpses to rise as cadaverous monsters, unliving lest they be decapitated and heat pierced by ironwood stake.

Basilea, are very anti superstition, with Paladins hunting in the ruins of old Promovantor, where dark covens of necromancy practice. Necromancy is outlawed in all civilised places, bar Ophidia, those caught are due a painful execution.

Despite it being outlawed, necromancers are never short of acolytes, the temptation of immortality for those who master it is great, despite that few actually do. Failure though, means condemning yourself for eternity to endless cold and night of the Utterdark.

Those that escape detection and succeed, violating the natural laws, these powerful few defy death itself to near immortality. Creating armies from corpses both fresh and long dead, clawing their way up to fill the ranks. The greatest necromances can raise tens of thousands of untiring, loyal forces that do not need to stop for food, and have no mercy.

Thank Pannithor that the path to necromancy is difficult, with damnation claiming those who fail, the toil of mastering this dark art rarely leaves them sane.Of the old races, most know to leave well alone, but for humans, they lust for this power and extension to their life.

Risen by black magic the souls are dragged from whatever resting place back into their decayed mortal frame. Trapped, they are but puppets to their masters' whims, hacking down the innocent, even their own loved ones. If the vessel is destroyed, the torment is not over as their soul may never now find rest, doomed to wander Pannithor for eternity, lest a priest or paladin bless them, or worse cast out to the Utterdark for all time. There body may be reanimated time and time again.

It is for this reason that necromancy causes such revulsion in right-thinking folk. There are creatures seeking an escape of the torment in the infernal planes, that welcome a return to the land of the living, in whatever body. These are willing servants to the necromancer, with some measure of self. Revenants, wights and wraiths all flock to the banner of an ambitious necromancer, hoping for some scant respite from the cold of the Utterdark.

When a sorcerer weaves the incantations of awakening, it is indiscriminate and will re-animate every dead creature nearby. Decomposing bodies of dogs, rodents, birds and horses will also be raised alongside the warriors, this increases the chance of discovery.
