The Phoenix is the symbol of Basilea: an emblem of rebirth, holy fire and blazing fury.

About

These semi-magical birds are summoned by the mages of Basilea to fight with the armies of the Hegemon. Phoenixes are vast birds of prey, part fire and part feather; it is unknown exactly how they came into being.

They are the favoured creature of the Shining One Fulgria, the goddess of fire, and legend states how they were created from her own sacred flames. They are noble birds who will serve the pure-hearted alone. They possess the power of speech and cannot abide the sight of evil. 1st Edition

The Phoenix is the symbol of Basilea; an emblem of rebirth, of holy fire and of blazing fury. These semi-magical birds are summoned by the mages of Basilea to fight with the armies of the Hegemon. There are a brave few heroes who utilise them as mounts, although elaborate spells of protection from fire must be performed before the Phoenix can be mounted.

Phoenixes are vast birds of prey, with wing spans of over thirty feet. Part fire and part feather, it is unknown exactly how they came into being. They are the favoured creature of the Shining One Fulgria, the goddess of fire and forging, and legend states how they were created from the flames of her own smithy. They are noble birds who will serve the pure-hearted alone. They possess the power of speech and cannot abide the sight of evil. Nor are they overly fond of rain.

There is a great paradox to the Phoenixes: they do not breed. It is said that there can never be more than seventeen of them in existence at the same time. When one ages or is mortally wounded, it will fly to the Abyss and cast itself into the depths. An eruption of fire follows and, several hours later, the air will echo to the cry of a new Phoenix as it rises into the sky. Why these holy birds are born from such an evil place, and how they manage to do so without being destroyed or enslaved, is a mystery.

Should their mount fall in battle, it is the honour-bound duty of those who ride the Phoenixes to make the perilous journey to the edge of the Abyss to cast any part of the bird, even a single feather, into the fiery chasm so that it may be reborn.
