Garrek Heavyhand is a notable Imperial Dwarf warrior of the Heavyhand Clan. He is known throughout Mantica for his brutal skill with the hammer.

Biography

Early Years

Born into poverty, Garrek has lived with the dishonour of the Twenty-Seven God Boons Shame since birth, decating his life to restore his clan's honour and return the boons. Over the years, he has gained several nicknames from his exploits throughout the years and the respect of the Free Dwarfs along with obtaining the Cloak of Miph and Warp Hammer.

Garrek remembers those who have fallen in battle over the years and carries their memory with him such as those lost obtaining the Warp Hammer

Twenty-Seven God Boons Shame

Five hundred years ago his forefather, Gilgulli Heavyhand, attempted to steal the Twenty-Seven God Boons, artifacts of the Wicked Ones seized by the dwarfs during the Winter War. He was caught, but not before he had seized these artifacts. These magic relics vanished from his grasp, set free to corrupt those who would find them in the world.

The Heavyhand Clan was thus dishonored. Garrek was born with this shame, as all in his clan are, but he sought to lift it. Leading his clan into battle, he thwarted both undead and orc forces who sought to crush the Golloch Empire. Naturally this has not impressed the stubborn dwarfs, so his family continues to live in shame. Garrek has also sought out the missing artifacts, wielding two in battle himself: the Warp Hammer and the Cloak of Miph. Garrek has obtained the Comb of Elesea. He has recovered 16 others, but still 9 remain missing.

• Warp Hammer was the first Boon Found and during the campaign to obtain the Warp Hammer the following people died: Crotheud, Braelwyr, Gedvior, Dramun, Corbut, Nrethod, Aenwyn, Arnot, Vynth, Maerdue, Svet, Oenwi, Brekkus, Thad, Maergan, Brea, Shelthwey and Craenoc

Garrek was originaly mentioned in the 1st Edition Rulebook but was only given unit rules in 1.0 Kings and Legends. He was included in the 2nd Edition Rulebook and the 3rd Edition Rulebook for the Dwarfs faction

Garrek, mightiest scion of the Heavyhand clan, is a Dwarf cursed by the sins of his forebears. His deeds are celebrated across the length and breadth of Mantica, sung in ghostly harmony by the song-wrights of Galahir and roared by drunken hirdmen at Iceblood Fjord.

His victories are known to a hundred different peoples and he is named by each according to a hundred different tongues. The peak-dwelling Elves of Alandar name him Sui Minuti – he of a thousand tempers. The coarse horse warriors of the Mammoth Steppe dub him the eastern wind, Ostreoya Wiat in their guttural language.

His name is said to be spoken even beyond the eastern marches of Ophidia, where those who speak the language of the Djinn whisper it in awe. The Ice Elves of the Bitter Lands know him too, naming him Asa Mallai, he who Bestrides Seven Lands. To his own people however, Garrek Heavyhand is called the oathbreaker, traitor and worse. His name is spoken with contempt or sadness, or very occasionally with grudging respect, but never with open admiration or in friendship.

The reason for this is simple: Garrek’s ancestor, Gilgulli, called ‘Goldless’ by every subsequent generation, committed the one sin for which no Dwarf or any of his line can ever be forgiven: he stole from his own. Infiltrating the treasure chamber of the High King, Gilgulli crept away bearing the Twenty-Seven Boons of the Gods, each a priceless wonder blessed with the very highest of magic. Though Gilgulli was discovered, the resting place of each of the Boons was not, for such things have a way of hiding themselves beyond the reach of mortals.

Born into a legacy that was none of his making, Garrek Heavyhand has borne his fate with dignity and honour. Where others might rage against such an injustice, Garrek has defied it. None can be sure exactly what drives him, for Garrek is more taciturn even than his fellow Dwarfs, but surely it must be a desire to restore honour to his clan as deeply rooted as the very mountains under which his peoples live. Though he remains silent on the matter, Garrek’s battles have taken him from one end of the world to the other, and each of his greatest victories has been punctuated by the discovery of one of the lost Boons.

It is clear that Garrek’s fate is not his own, and many now hold that he is being led upon a path of repentance by those that created the Twenty-Seven Boons. Perhaps once all are recovered and eventually returned to their proper resting place, the dishonour will be lifted and the crime absolved. Such a thing may never come about, however, as the Boons should, by rights, be returned to the Royal Hoard, but following the Dwarf Civil War, this now belongs to King Golloch. Returning the Boons there would earn Garrek no favour with the Dwarfs of the Northern Clans, with whom Garrek is convinced the Heavyhands belong.

The deeds Garrek has performed in his quest are truly epic, earning him the honour of ten lifetimes and surely absolving him and every one of his line until the end of all things, of the crime of Gilgulli. But, no matter how many victories he wins, how many doomed allies he delivers and how many innocents he saves, to his own people, Garrek shall always bear the stain of dishonour Though they accept his steel amongst theirs, his arm beside their own, they still glance upon him askance and blanche, upon hearing his name. To a Dwarf, honour is all: and a crime is never, ever forgotten.
