Breath of the Desert is a short story by D. R. Chester.

About

Part 1

Khalef had hired a band of Ogres to investigate attacks on the Ophidian border. Khalef ordered Jareed, one of his bodyguards from Khopt-remun, to ask a local fisherman who was helping them how far it was to his fishing village that was recently attacked and they were told they should be there by evening.

As they approached, Khalef ordered one of the Ogres, Orgok, to go search the village for information on the attackers. Khalef, via Jareed, then pressed the fisherman for more information on the attackers. The fisherman told them they weren't pirates and that "they came from the desert".

Part 2

Murgamog was in command of the company of Ogres and was leading his men towards the fishing village. Orgok was translating their orders from Khalef and were told to enter the village to look for clues. The company entered the village and after some investigation found nothing of note.

Orgok then was told via Khalef that the enemy is in the desert however Murgamog refused to go as there’s no food or water out there, only death in the desert. After some arguing, Khalef pointed to the scavengers flying over head and Orgok advised Murgamog that Khalef says the enemy is close and they must go. Murgamog agreed to set up camp then leave in the morning

Part 3

Naphet-at-ahem led the attack on Murgamog Ogres with combination of arrows from his archers and spearman. Naphet-at-ahem raised a carpet of dead creatures from the riverbed to halt the Ogres who had charged his spearmen, worried they would make short work of them due to the heavy hammers they carried.

Khalef then attempted to summon a lesser Djinn to assist them and a swirling tornado was released towards Naphet-at-ahem forces which revealed more of his forces beneath the dirt. Once the lesser Djinn dissipated, Naphet-at-ahem sent his forces forward and Naphet-at-ahem watched the massacre of the Ogres. Khalef attempted to run however was killed by an arrow fired by Naphet-at-ahem's archers.
