Straddling the mortal realm nd the incorporeal domains below is the First Circle of the Abyss.
The bulk of the Abyssal denizens are born here, in seemingly limitless numbers, Lower Abyssals, or ‘Diaboli’, and winged gargoyles are birthed from volcanic pits, breathing in toxic miasma as if it were clean air.
The creatures fight amongst themselves constantly, torture mortals that were dragged here, a breeding ground for tempered warriors of battle.
For many Lower Abyssals, life in the Abyss is violent and short, with no chance to attain the favour of their masters, Tiny imps serve the more powerful Abyssal Warriors as a means to survive, else they end up as dinner.
Those with ambition though, strike unholy alliances with the lesser beasts of the First Circle, fusing with their mount to create an altogether new, and utterly freakish, abomination.
These ‘Harbingers’ are often used as swift outriders in the Abyssal army, and success in battle earns them a gift beyond the reach of most, promotion to the Second Circle.
