The Lord of Nightmares bears the Shield of Djet, a shield that, legend says, is able to turn the gaze of even the most pure-hearted servant of the Shining Ones.
The shield is, by all accounts, a black mirror into which no being claiming to serve the light may peer without some hidden reach of his soul being revealed as tainted and impure.
Needless to say, for a noble creature such as an elf lord or a Basilean war priest to see such a thing revealed in his own reflection is sufficient to shatter their resolve.
