Dungeon Saga: Infernal Crypts
Following on the story of Return of Valendor, although featuring some new heroes.
About
The third quest module takes the party to the Abyss in order to retrieve a fire lotus. This rare flower grows near lava flows in the Abyss and is needed by Furial of the Order of the Shrouded Sceptre. As with other modules, numerous new cards are included.
This is also the set that includes the "Abyssal Champion Overlord" deck for running demon enemies as the overlord and includes a host of demonic miniatures to represent one's minions.
Mission Description
The strange and unnatural conditions in the Abyssal realm breed strange and unusual flora as well as fauna. Living, sentient plants, trees which subsist on pure darkness and deadly flowers which will lure prey in before devouring it. One such unique plant is the so-called Fire Lotus, which legend has it grows on lava flows, drawing sustenance from the very liquid magma itself. This plant is incredibly rare, even within the confines of that hellish place, with many doubting its very existence.
It is said that the nectar from one such plant would be sufficient to create potions powerful enough to cure any malady – even to reverse the effects of death itself. Furial is a member of the Order of the Shrouded Sceptre, renowned as one of the finest if most eccentric potion makers in the kingdom. After decades of study, he is convinced that he can produce a potion powerful enough to cheat death, and all he needs is to obtain the key ingredient – a Fire Lotus. The leaders of his order will not condone any expedition into the Abyss, no matter the promise of his work or the standing he holds, and he has been ordered to abandon his goals and engage in more academic pursuits.
However, Furial is not one to give up easily. Frustrated at the lack of vision of his contemporaries, he has approached a group of adventurers in order to engage their services in helping him. He has offered them each a small fortune in gold upfront, together with the promise of double that sum again upon completion of the task. Though he has told them of what he seeks, and what he may be able to do with it when he has it, he may have been a little hazy as to details when it came to the precise nature of their destination. The Abyss is not a place into which even the most hardened heroes will travel willingly, no matter the reward. The pages of history are littered with the footnotes which are all that remains of those who thought themselves brave or brilliant enough to do so. Furial believes that the potential reward is worth the risk, but is not befuddled enough to think that others may share this conviction.
Even worse than the general nature of their destination is the specific horror which awaits them there. Furial has ascertained that the best possible examples of the Fire Lotus lie in the lair of one particular denizen of the Abyss – a creature of legend and one of the most accomplished and wicked creatures ever to emerge from the pit – none other than Drech'nok himself. This general of the underworld was the bane of the civilised world in the time before the Great Flood, and over a thousand years of confinement did nothing to ease his disposition. Now, in addition to being a powerful and vicious warrior amongst a whole race of powerful and vicious warriors, Drech’nok is also driven by a murderous state of permanent rage, eased only by the presence of the Fire Lotus and other rare and exotic plants cultivated in his own personal realm. Drech’nok is one of the worst killers that has been seen both without and within the Abyss, marked as a blood soaked slaughterer even amongst his own kin. To cross him is to invite certain death. To steal from him is to court eternal torture in the fiery pit.
Furial felt it expedient to leave out these finer details of his quest. If they are successful, he will happily pay them ten times over the amount that has been agreed. If they are not, they will be dead, and he will be able to slip out of the realm of Drech'nok unnoticed and start again with a new party, though admittedly it will be harder a second time around. In order to reach their destination with speed, as well as keep the heroes from guessing where they are headed, Furial has constructed a spell that will transport them instantly to the outer reaches of the infernal place, where hopefully Drech’nok will not notice the arrival of a magically powered party. After that, it will be a case of staying out of sight and hoping that the heroes are as good as they say that they are. And if not, it’ll be a case of finding some more, hoping that word hasn’t gotten around too quickly and that Drech’nok has a short memory...
